Highschool of the Dead (学園黙示録 Gakuen Mokushiroku, "Academy Apocalypse") is a manga series written by Daisuke Satō and illustrated by Shōji Satō. The story follows a group of high school students caught in the middle of a zombie apocalypse and a nuclear holocaust. The series has been serialized in Fujimi Shobo's Monthly Dragon Age since September 2006 and has been published internationally in a number of languages. Highschool of the Dead was adapted into an anime television series by Madhouse which aired in Japan from July 5, 2010 to September 20, 2010.
Plot
Highschool of the Dead is set in the present day, beginning as the world is struck by a deadly pandemic that turns humans into zombies but referred to as "Them", euphemistically referred to by the main characters as "them" since they are no longer considered human.
The story follows a group of high school students, the high school's nurse, and a young girl as they fight their way to safety through the deadly streets of Japan during a worldwide catastrophic event known as the "Outbreak". Led by sophomore Takashi Komuro, the local group of survivors consists of six others and a small dog, and creating a gestalt team with one purpose: to survive. The authors used role-playing terminology to categorize the specific attributes each character brings to the group. Takashi Komuro serves mainly as the team leader. Rei Miyamoto, Saeko Busujima, and Kohta Hirano are considered fighters because of their exceptional skills with weapons; Saya Takagi described as the wizard due to her intelligence and deduction skills; Shizuka Marikawa assigned the role of priest as she is a licensed physician.
The plot is initially concerned with survival and escape from the titular high school and zombies, but as the series proceeds it introduces the additional threats of societal collapse, in the form of dangerous fellow survivors and the possible decay of the characters' own moral codes.

Highschool of the Dead began serialization in Monthly Dragon Age in July 2006, but went on hiatus from the end of 2008 until March 2010, with another short break between May and July 2010.
The manga has been licensed for international release in a number of languages and regions. It is published in Spain by Glénat España, in Germany by Carlsen, in Brazil by Panini Comics, in Canada and France for French-language publication by Pika Édition, in English in Canada and the US by Yen Press and in Taiwan by Kadokawa Media. The first volume was released in May 2008 in Spain, in March 2010 in Germany, and in April 2010 in Brazil. Shortly following the inception of the series, however, the manga became popular enough in English via scanlation to draw the attention of the creators, who included a message in English within the magazine printing of the fifth chapter.
Anime
The March 2010 issue of Monthly Dragon Age announced that an anime television adaptation of Highschool of the Dead had been green-lighted. Produced by Madhouse under the directorship of Tetsuro Araki, the series aired on the Japanese network AT-X from July 5, 2010 to September 20, 2010 and rebroadcast days later on seven other Japanese networks. The series is also being simultaneously streamed by Anime Network in North America, although these airings are uncensored during explicit scenes. and Madman Entertainment in Australia and New Zealand. Sentai Filmworks is licensor of the series in North America and will release the series with an English dub (produced by Seraphim Digital) in the future. while Madman Entertainment will distribute the series in Australia and New Zealand and Manga Entertainment UK will distribute in the United Kingdom. The seventh volume of the manga released on February 10, 2011 will include a 20 minute original video animation on Blu-ray disc.
The series opening theme song is "HIGHSCHOOL OF THE DEAD" by Kishida Kyōdan and The Akeboshi Rockets. The series closing theme songs differ in each episode and each is sung by Maon Kurosaki.
Highschool of the Dead: Drifters of the Dead OVA is scheduled to be released on April 20, 2011.

Kelebihan:
+ Jarang sekali ada anime yang menceritakan tentang zombie-zombie, apalagi dalam kehidupan di sekolah, ini bisa jadi trobosan baru dalam dunia anime.
+ Anime ini tidak hanya menceritakan tentang zombie namun tetap menyiratkan akan pentingnya persahabatan, kerja sama yang baik dan saling tolong menolong.
+ Hal terpenting adalah, anime ini menyiratkan bahwa apabila ada usaha dan kemauan maka jalan pasti akan terbuka.
Kekurangan:
- Untuk di Indonesia sendiri, terkhusus di Palembang, sangat sulit untuk menemukan komik maupun DVD dari anime ini, sehingga menyulitkan para fans untuk mendapatkannya.
- Untuk komik yang dibaca remaja, komik ini terlalu "melebihkan" bagian-bagian tertentu pada wanita, dan banyak sekali adegan-adegan "terbuka" di komik ini, sehingga tidak cocok dibaca untuk anak remaja yang masih labil.
- Karena banyak bagian-bagian "aneh" mungkin hal inilah yang mengahambat pendistribusiannya di Indonesia.
